So, we've (me and Fio) got a final assignment to write a review about an Indonesian movie, using Korean. Hahaha... Korean........ (okay, forget this). Originally, we want to write a review about this family movie but it turned out to be so soap opera :| so we decided to change it. And my friend suggested to watch an Indonesian movie called 'Refrain'
Meet Afgan and Maudy Ayunda! Both of them are Indonesia's talented singer and they sung for this movie's soundtrack. Trust me, you'll repeat it again (and again and again) after playing the soundtracks once.
Basically, Refrain is about a classic complicated love story between boys and girls. Been best friend since their childhood, been the first for everything to each other, Nata (Afgansyah Reza) and Niki (Maudy Ayunda) haven't realize that one day, love can change everything between them. Niki believed there will be nothing between her and Nata, but Nata has fallen for Niki secretly since long ago. Nata hid his feeling by being annoying and over-protective to Niki. Then suddenly, Ana (Chelsea Islan), the freshman, came to their life, being their close friend and falling for Nata, secretly too.
Niki, without knowing Nata's feeling, fell in love with Oliver, a cool basketball player who is interested in Niki at the first sight. Their friendship gradually farther away as Niki and Oliver became lover. Nata stated to Ana that Niki has her own new world which he failed to understand.
Until one day, every feeling they are trying hard to hide started to be acknowledged by each other. Will love find their way back home?
From my point of view, this movie based on the statement which stated that "There is no friendship between a man and a woman." I believe in this statement too, to be honest hahaha... (okay, this isn't important right)
Originally, this movie based on a novel with the same title. I've read the novel once and it was too heart-breaking truthfully saying. Well, there will always be something's missing if we compare the book with the movie.
Let's jump to my opinion now~
First, I think that the feeling that Ana had for Nata doesn't look like love when it's supposed to be love. Because when Ana knew that Nata loved Niki, she doesn't look like angry or hurt or surprised. Or probably because she knew this would be coming?
Second, the plot is flowing really fast and it looks a bit weird, for me.
Third, I appreciate how Afgan, Maudy, and Chelsea played their character really well :") Like... I really like how Nata frustrated when he knew Niki fell in love with other boy, how Niki finally realized that it's always been Nata, and how Ana portrayed an innocent girl very well.
The ending scene is really... Indonesian tbh, the girl flew to other country to get her love and they met and they confessed to each other, so typical. But since it's sweet, it doesn't matter.
I would give 8/10 for this movie to sum it all~ And here some quotes from the movie and from the soundtrack~
"Berani sayang ya berani bilang dong." --Danny.
"It's always been you, Niki." --Nata
"It's always been you too..." --Niki
Maybe I felt it all alone, maybe I was afraid, to find that you're where I belong [...] You're a song that won't stop playing, you're the part that keeps repeating, sing it all over again, like a refrain, you are my refrain... (Refrain sung by Afgan)
